Our PhotoStory (Session 4, February 9, 2010)

Below is the Photo Story designed by our group for Year 7 secondary school students of Food Technology. (You may need to download it to ensure you can view it effectively). It was created in iMovie on a Mac which works very similarly to Microsoft PhotoStory for PC's. Both are very straightforward and intuitive to use.  Enjoy! Patcy, Emily, Tess and Sanju

  1. From a personal perspective, being involved with students with learning disabilities PhotoStory is a very effective tool for teaching/learning as most of these students are great visual learners.
Also one of the ways students who have low non verbal skills are able to express their learning outcomes is by creating PhotoStories/Powerpoints. As a teacher, I am able to create a more inclusive learning environment by differentiating assessments/learning outcomes by using this tool.
Technology is key in helping all students access the curriculum, and helping them be successful in one way or the other in learning.
The visuals, music, colours also help in engaging their attention and drawing them to the task.
Why I believe PhotoStory is a good teaching tool:It builds on their sequencing skills, all tasks are chunked up into manageable bit sizes so students with low working memories will be able to understand tasks better and it makes a stunning presentation of a lesson.

  2. I agree Sanju, PhotoStories are a very effective tool for catering for all learning styles and levels ~ particularly for those with learning disabilities.
Particularly from a teaching perspective I found this story a very effective tool as it caters for those who need to have written instructions AND those who learn visually.
To develop it further audio could also be added of each step of the recipe to cater for even more learners. It can be adapted to suit to many different subjects and activities ~ for teaching, learning and assessment.

It's very useful for teaching students who have difficulties following sequences of actions/instructions. It's really marvellous. I love our Photostory. It's yummy.
